In the CW documentary series “TV We Love”, 77-year-old Grandy recalled what it was like to shoot the show on a real ship with passengers on vacation. “When we filmed on a ship, we always had to deal with tough conditions,” he said.
“We ran into some problems we couldn’t have anticipated. The actual passengers on the ship weren’t particularly happy about the large camera cables, lights, and people disrupting their vacation. The ceilings on those ships were very low. The lights were so close to the ceiling that one day they triggered the sprinkler system,” he said, laughing.
According to him, another incident occurred during the trip between San Francisco and Alaska, when the ship they were filming on was hit by a severe storm.
“The ship was listing like this,” Grandy revealed. “They were putting out vomit bags in the lobby because everyone was getting sick,” he said.
The main cast of the series consisted of the ship’s crew, including Grandy as Gopher, the activities officer on the luxurious cruise ship Pacific Princess.
In each new episode, different celebrity guests played new passengers who joined the main characters in stories full of adventure and romance. “The Love Boat” aired between 1977 and 1986 and became a major success in several countries.
